Winners of the 2003 RER Innovative Product Award competition have been announced.
The Grand Award goes to Bobcat Co. for its Toolcat 5600 Utility Work Machine. First runner-up is JLG Industries for its Triple-L Trailers drop bed trailers. Second runner-up is Auger Master Corp. for its Auger Master Model A hydraulic auger system. Third runner-up is Genie Industries for its TZ34/20 trailer mounted articulating boom. Congratulations to all the winners and entrants on their innovative new products.

 Agile Displays introduces a new portable message center featuring two LED signs mounted back to back on a lightweight, towable trailer. Each sign pivots independently up to 30 degrees for maximum directional coverage. Display your one-, two-, three- or four- line messages, animated graphics, or date/time/temperature by simply using the built in computer and keyboard. The PD-2200/3200 models are available with red, yellow, or green LEDs, and in eight different trailer frame colors. Additional options include solar power, cellular remote programming, or a radar speed monitor. Applications include but are not limited to special events, sales, advertising and traffic awareness.

Alert Easy Pro for Java
Alert Management Systems, a U.S. supplier of Windows-based rental software for multistore rental operations, recently released new Java-based software, Alert EasyPro for Java 4.2. The new web-enabled design provides seamless connectivity with Microsoft Office. Rental transactions and reports can be edited with a palette of Windows text formatting options, saved in a variety of formats (including HTML), and instantly emailed or faxed right from your rental counter. Java also provides tighter integration of “bolt-on” software including PartSmart, VSI-Fax faxing and emailing software, IC Verify credit card processing, drivers license scanning, Microsoft MapPoint mapping software, and several leading accounting systems (now including MAS 90/200).

The Vantage 500 is a rugged, reliable and versatile welder designed to stand up to the punishment of the most demanding rental fleet applications. The top of the line unit features a standard stainless steel roof and side panels for added corrosion-resistance, simple controls, and Lincoln’s patented Chopper Technology for easy arc starts, smooth arc action, low spatter and excellent bead appearance. This multi-process welder is capable of Stick, TIG, MIG, Flux-Cored and Arc Gouging. It provides 500 amps of pure welding power at 100 percent duty cycle. The Vantage 500 also generates an industry-leading 12,000 watts of AC auxiliary power, and allows you to simultaneously weld and use the generator to power construction lights and tools at the job site.

Bobcat Company’s Toolcat 5600 utility work machine — which has already made a huge splash with end-users and is making its way into the rental market — is the first unit of its kind to feature front-mounted attachment capabilities. The two-passenger vehicle, combining four-wheel drive and all-wheel steer, is powered by a 44 horsepower diesel engine. It performs a variety of tasks using several traditional skid-steer loader attachments. A rear cargo box enables transport of materials and supplies up to 2,000 pounds; and a rear hitch can handle trailers and other towed equipment up to 4,000 pounds. 
Triple-L Trailers from JLG incorporate a Power Deck hydraulic system that lowers the trailer deck to ground level for loading and then raises it for hauling. Because of the unique Lower, Load and Lift feature, the trailers offer a solution for dealers, rental centers and their customers to use for transporting a broad range of equipment. The entire deck can be lowered or raised hydraulically in less than 15 seconds, so there is no need for cumbersome ramps, ascending grades or using additional personnel. More than 20 different models with capacities ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 pounds are available.
The new auger master is a self-contained hydraulic auger system that slides into a class III trailer receptacle of a ¾- or 1-ton pickup truck. It is a planetary drive unit with forward and reverse, greater than 140-degree swing boom and 80-inch telescopic boom. Powered by the dependable electric start V-Twin Honda, it imparts virtually no damage to existing landscaping. It requires very low maintenance and offers simple operation. There are no sheer pins to break and it features a 2-inch hex drive. Other features include a digging depth up to 5 feet, auger bit diameters from 4 inches to 30 inches, landscaping bits and hydraulic outriggers.
Genie’s new TZ34/20 trailer mounted articulating boom has set new standards in design and ease-of-use in the trailer mounted boom marketplace. The articulating boom, with its new telescopic primary boom, provides an industry-leading working height of 40-feet and a working outreach of 20-feet. The exclusive Genie Automatic Leveling System provides 11-degrees of leveling capability and allows set up in less than 40 seconds when all four outriggers are deployed simultaneously. The TZ was designed to be easily used, no matter the operator’s level of experience. Rugged, yet lightweight, the TZ34/20 easily tows behind most vehicles using a 2-inch ball and Class 2 hitch and has a tow speed rating of 60 mph, allowing faster transportation to the job site.
This single axle, lightweight compressor, powered by a Caterpillar 3126B turbocharged diesel engine, weighs in at 5,580 pounds and delivers a hefty 750cfm @ 100psi. To complement this compressor, we will also offer this same size unit in a 500cfm @ 150psi; and a 600cfm @ 125psi working pressure, in the very near future. Atlas Copco continues to use the latest technology to bring the most reliable and up to date products to the marketplace. The SafeCheck 5 has been designed specifically for the tool rental industry and carries out a range of test sequences with the minimum amount of operator control. It has a unique automatic test process, selecting the test sequence most appropriate to the type of tool. The unit then provides a clear pass/fail indication of the tool’s electrical safety condition. The SafeCheck 5 can also be used to test extension and power cords. All purchases are supplied complete with a free video CD to guide the operator through its use.
The SafeCheck 8 is a comprehensive automatic electrical safety tester. An operator simply connects the rental tool to the SafeCheck 8, follows some simple prompts and automatically receives a readout of the equipment’s condition and electrical safety. The SafeCheck 8 has a memory that can record up to 6,000 sets of results and automatically prints out a test tag to attach to the power cord of the tool. The SafeCheck 8 not only protects the customer but also the rental business by providing the necessary proof and traceability that the product was safe at the time of supply.
The Bear Cat 6 inch engine driven, towable chipper handles branches up to 6 inches in diameter, chipping toughest brush with ease. “Try again” feed system automatically retries feeding limbs three times before feed system overrides. Dakota AG Innovations LLC began marketing the product, Dakota Shine, in the fall of 2002, to help equipment dealers restore the color, luster and value of their used and rental equipment. Dakota Shine is designed for those who have experienced problems with the fading and oxidizing of the paint, decals and plastic components on their equipment. It can restore those surfaces to within 98 percent of the original color, and last as long as the original paint did under comparable conditions. What makes it different than other products, is that it works with pigments in the surface and restores them to their original state.
Revolutionary environmental base safely retains liquid should a leak occur, eliminating costly jobsite cleanup. It features forklift pockets for ease of loading and unloading the unit, and a state-of-the-art autostart controller that uses a single float controls the starting and stopping of the unit. The lightweight aluminum acoustically treated enclosure offers excellent corrosion resistance and reduced sound levels well below industry standards (as low as 63 dBa under full load). The patented dual suction priming assisted 6-inch pump and John Deere 4045D diesel engine used on our silent pump. The priming system consists of Gorman-Rupp’s venturi and compressor arrangement. The pump is equipped with the dry run seal making this unit ideal for applications involving long suction lines and intermittent flows. 
With the addition of the TE 46, 56 and 56-ATC combihammers, Hilti offers a complete line to provide rental customers the chiseling and drilling power needed for virtually any job. These combihammers offer such an increase in performance that they provide up to 40 percent faster drilling speed and up to 30 percent higher removal rate when chipping than the tools they replace. They are ideal for drilling anchor and through holes in concrete, and medium chiseling applications. The Active Torque Control on the TE 56-ATC provides added operator protection because the tool disengages the drive system if the tool body rotates too quickly. 
With up to 95 percent dust-free performance, the Hilti DG 150 Grinding System (including SR concrete grinder, power converter, high efficiency 50 liter vacuum, carriage and diamond cup wheel) is designed for rental customers with dust critical applications or in occupied facilities. With its dust-resistant brushless motor, automatic self-cleaning filter and jobsite versatility, this system is ideal for grinding concrete, stone and masonry, as well as removing paint, adhesives and epoxy coatings. The DG 150’s SR brushless motor helps prevent dust from wearing out the motor prematurely and lasts up to 30 times longer than conventional grinders. 
With 135-foot platform height and exceptional horizontal reach, the JLG Model 1350SJP telescoping boom lift is the highest reaching self-propelled telescoping boom lift available. It covers up to 50 percent more area than boom lifts with a 125-foot platform height, and has 1,000 pounds restricted platform capacity over the majority of its work envelope. The lift has unrestricted platform capacity of 500 pounds. The Model 1350SJP incorporates the JibPLUS 8-foot articulating jib boom that moves both vertically and horizontally. And, in its stowed configuration, the machine can be transported on a standard lowboy trailer. Advanced operating features include proportional controls, oscillating axle and 4-wheel drive.
The Model TF6-42 Transformer machine from JLG is a telehandler that converts to a rough terrain aerial work platform with drive and lift controls in the platform. It is the only machine that can be operated in either mode by a single person while complying with ANSI and ASME standards. Used as a telescopic handler, the Transformer machine has a 42-foot maximum lift height with a 6,600-pound load and a 28-foot reach capability. As an aerial work platform, the machine features a large 4–foot by 8-foot platform with up to 2,000 pounds platform capacity. 
The SkyPower system from JLG is a built-in generator option driven by the boom lift’s engine to provide 7,500W of 110V or 220V AC power. A power cable and airline is routed from the base-mounted generator through the boom power track to GFIC outlets in the platform. It eliminates a separate ground-based generator with potentially dangerous cables hanging down from the platform. With a SkyPower system, workers can safely use electric powered tools including the SkyWelder and SkyCutter packages without stopping work to reposition a second piece of equipment each time they move to a new location. 
Keyenabler is a programmable keyless ignition system that is easily installed and consists of wireless relay that replaces vehicle’s starter relay and keypad that’s wired into 12 VDC power supply. Each trained operator receives his own code, which is inputted. When the code is accepted, the device lights and START button is pushed — wirelessly enabling the starter relay. Now the vehicle’s key (or button that replaces key) will start the vehicle. The vehicle cannot be “hot wired” and stolen because starter relay must be enabled before the vehicle will start. Mechanic’s code entry can disable other operator codes while vehicle is under repair.
